Competency models have a bad press. Some of the complaints levelled at them include “too long”, “impenetrable language”, “too many competencies”, “inflexible”, and “difficult for non HR people to use”. In an effort to shed their reputation, competency models also go by different names e.g. capability templates or leadership frameworks.
Despite this, every business does need to codify and describe the capabilities that are crucial to its business success. A 'fit for purpose' competency model is the compass that aligns recruitment and selection, development, and performance management with the business strategy. At their best great competency models are absorbed into everyday use in a business and thereby become catalysts for the creation of a new organisational culture and language.
We pride ourselves on working with our clients to create competency models that defy the stereotypes and deliver real business value. Let us help you do the same.
