Book Reviews

NLP Made Easy

by Carol Harris

Summary

A gallop through the history and application of NLP, this reads like a basic academic reference or text book, and best read in this way i.e. dipped into on an "as required" basis. The preface advocates using the book like this, but the front cover overclaims for it, suggesting it is more of an engaging read. What you will find here are brief explanations of terminology, key models and approaches, and applications, as well as a potted history of the movement.

The Best Bits

I was interested to read about one or two of the frameworks, and enjoyed skimming through the history chapter.

The Worst Bits

Not expecting a text book, I did not enjoy reading it and only ploughed my way through to the end so I could write this review! The author also sets herself the challenge of making the book jargon free, and fails - the average person (and I am one of them) does not know what "generative" or "fractall modeling" mean! As for the few case studies, they are devoid of character and detail and so are neither convincing nor inspiring. I am still searching for an engaging and informative introduction to NLP.
